Exploring the Intersections of Yin Yoga, Poetry and Sound
Exploring the Intersections of Yin Yoga, Poetry, and Sound
This workshop weekend will explore how connecting Yin Yoga with the practices of Poetry and Sound create an embodied form of meditation that supports opening, reflection, and healing. Through experiential group sessions, participants will collectively study, discuss, and practice together to deepen their own understandings within these foundations of the Jamtse School of Yin Yoga. Participants will also receive invaluable opportunities to develop their own voice, both poetically and musically, while sharing in the creation of classes and meditative experiences for each other within the weekend’s sessions. Furthermore, group discussion and feedback will help hone each individual’s relationships to these three practices, and help support further exploration and offering in their own lives.
Those familiar with Biff Mithoefer’s work, and the practices of Jamtse Yin Yoga, understand the powerful synergy of Yin, Poetry and Sound. Biff is the author of The Yin Yoga Kit and co-author of The Therapeutic Yoga Kit. Through years of offering and refining one expression of this fusion, Biff has led Yin Yoga Teacher Training's as deeply connective circles around the world. In doing so, Biff and his practices have facilitated a unique community of practitioners and collective wisdom which builds on tradition, while also embracing the true heart and meaning of our own stories.
This weekend workshop provides a rare opportunity to directly explore these facets of the Jamste Yin Yoga approach, while also creating a setting where students may offer their own insights and experiences from this combination of healing traditions. Students will be invited to memorize two simple poems in preparation for the weekend workshop, in which to directly explore and expand within the weekend’s sessions.
The Workshop weekend will include:
- Evening practices of Jamtse Yin Yoga with live poetry, drumming, and sound.
- Group practices directly engaging the recitation and memorization of poetry, while also using the voice to explore our own held stories.
- Vocal exercises in toning and Ragas - one tradition of sacred sound.
- Nature connection; pairing the process of nature with Yin postures, poetry recitation, and sound creation.
- Break-out groups where students directly discuss and gain hands-on experiences in incorporating Poetry and Sound into a Yin Yoga context.
- Group discussions of selected poems from the Jamtse Yin Yoga Teacher Trainings.
Please email Kristen with any questions
Preparation: Please prepare for this weekend with a memorized poem of your choice, and bring along with you any additional poems you like or have written. In addition, please revisit the excerpt from the Hafiz Poem below and try your best to memorize it! You are also invited to bring any instrument(s) you feel called to bring. And please remember to bring a journal!
Hafiz Poem Excerpt to memorize:
" This place where you are right now
God circled on a map for you.
Wherever your eyes and arms and heart can move
Against the earth and the sky,
The Beloved has bowed there –
Our Beloved has bowed there knowing
You were coming"
We look forward to sharing this weekend exploring Yin Yoga , Poetry, and Sound with you
This weekend workshop will be co-facilitated by Biff Mithoefer, Eric Archer, and Kristen Volpone. Eric and Kristen are long-time assistant’s of Biff, and bring unique and compelling experience to the weekend’s exploration. Eric is a musician, artist, poet, and educator, who has shared his music and poetry in combination with Biff’s Yin Yoga Teacher Training modules. Eric’s direct experience through his creative practices has been paired with his love of Yin Yoga in this workshop, and together allow him to share his passions by serving others and building community with presence. Kristen is a teaching assistant to all of the Jamtse Yin Yoga Teacher Trainings in the United States. She is a trauma sensitive teacher who integrates the use of poetry and sound in her Yoga classes and workshops in Manhattan and Brooklyn. One of her main intentions is to offer Yin Yoga to communities that may not have access to them, such as, hospitals, schools, and trauma-sensitive organizations. To her the blend of Yin yoga, poetry, and sound nurtures compassion, deep listening and honouring yourself. Together, it is a joy for the three instructors to join in co-creating this weekend — diving deeply into the heart of the Jamste Yin Yoga Method.
